Purpose
- To be responsible for all catering and hotel services on board.
- To line manage the catering departing including performance management, supporting their wellbeing onboard.
- To be responsible for the preparation of port documentation required for entry and clearance.
Duties & Responsibilities
- To have overall responsibility, direction, organisation and supervision of work and material for the efficient operation of all hotel services with particular reference to:
- Encouraging all Catering Staff to provide a welcoming and helpful service to all personnel onboard.
- Oversee compilation of menus by the cooks, supervising catering standards so that the principles of domestic economy are observed and a balanced, varied and interesting diet is provided.
- Controlling and recording of distribution and optimum use of all provisions, catering hardware, equipment, accommodation furnishings and linen. Managing stock control so that at all times an accurate account is available for all such items.
- The general care and operator maintenance of all accommodation furnishings and catering/galley equipment.
- Management of the provision and laundering of adequate stocks of linen.
- The cleaning of cabins, accommodation and public spaces.
- The cleaning of all food preparation and serving areas, fridges, stores, stores flats and lift shafts.
- The ordering of all fresh, frozen and dry provisions, hardware, soft furnishings, linen and catering equipment as per the BAS procedures in liaison with the BAS Cam Catering & Accommodation Manager. To check on receipt for correct quantities and quality prior to loading and stowing.
- The compilation of victualling figures and costs to be supplied to BAS as requested.
- To compile the documentation required by port authorities for the issuance of Clearance, assisting all persons involved to ensure an efficient port arrival and departure.
- The operation of the Bond. To include:-
- Liaison with Customs.
- Checking, loading & stowing of all bonded stores.
- Records of all transactions and payments.
- To strictly observe the waste management policy as per the BAS Waste Management Plan
- To be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of all Special Purpose Personnel & Passengers.
- To monitor and enforce the bar hours as per SEA-SD-MISC-ANX-02.
- To liaise with BASCAM regarding training/courses for personnel on board.
- To give all new joiners and SPP a thorough safety brief and record this as well as ensuring re-familiarisation checklists are completed for existing staff.
- Maintain up to date accurate cabin plans and muster lists, these shall be displayed and updated as necessary.
- When a doctor is not carried the Purser shall be in charge of medical care on board and of the medical emergency response.
- The Purser shall be responsible for signing people on / signing people off the ship, completion of discharge books, certification/SEA checks (liaise Master), tax letters, rail warrants, flights and accommodation and travel arrangement (liaise Polar Operations Support Team).
- To be responsible for ISM hard-copy documentation updates.
- To manage and maintain the ship’s key system.
- To promptly report defects concerning catering equipment, galley, accommodation, lab furnishings and associated spaces, to notify Polar Marine Engineering for provision of spares/OEM assistance/refit planning.
- To undertake any other duties consistent with the key responsibilities and duties of the post, as directed by the Master.
Qualifications
Essential
- STCW Ship's Cook Certificate of Competency
- Award in Food Safety in Catering Level 3 (MCA Recognised)
- Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) without restrictions
- STCW basic training (PST, FPFF, EFA, & PSSR)
- STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
- Evidence of continual professional development
- Extensive relevant experience in Catering/Hotel Services
- Strong awareness of health, safety, security and environmental issues
- Demonstrate independence and initiative in addressing the allocated tasks
- Ability to mentor and manage a flexible catering team
- Previous seagoing experience
- An enthusiasm for the work of BAS
- Line management in a relevant environment
- Ability to lead the shipboard medical response party
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload
- To work well with ship’s staff, scientists, station and shoreside personnel
- Have an innovative approach to problem solving
- Excellent communication skills with an approachable nature
- Strong leadership skills
- Enthusiasm and the flexibility to learn new skills
- Taking pride in contributing to delivering a platform for scientific research
- Broad IT skills and previous experience using a Planned Maintenance System
Desirable
- Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering Level 3 (MCA Recognised)
- STCW Proficiency in Medical Care
- Catering/Hotel Services qualifications
